5 Fun Facts About World Cup You Didn't Know

So the football World Cup is drawing near in about a month and everyone can't wait to watch the team they are rooting for! Soon enough, you will see people rocking their national jerseys down Orchard road.

Since we are all a little restless while looking forward to the big event (maybe its just me), I've decided to compile a list of interesting facts you probably wouldn't have known, unless you are literally crazy over football.

For some of those who knows nothing about football but do not want to be stuck in situations where you awkwardly listen to your peers talking about the world cup, this is the article for you.

1. Netherlands has never won a World Cup.

That's right. With so many amazing players coming from the country, wonderful players like Van Nistelrooy, John Cryuff, Van Der Sar, to the more recent Van Persie, and Robben, its really quite surprising they have yet to win.

The Dutch were close to winning their trophy three times, losing in the final games against Germany (1974), Argentina (1978) and most recently, Spain (who happens to be the champion for the first time).

2. The fastest goal in World Cup is 10.89 seconds.

It took place in the first round game in 2002 World Cup, scored by Hakan Sukur of Turkey (Turkey vs Korea Repubic, 29 June 2002).

3. The top goal scorer in World Cup is Ronaldo.

No, its not Cristiano Ronaldo. Its the one everyone casually refer to as "the fat Ronaldo." He top the goal scoring chart at 15 goals.

4. The Youngest goal scorer, hat trick hero and youngest scorer in the finals.

At just 17 years and 239 days old, Pele became the youngest player to ever score in the World Cup competition. He claimed the youngest Hat Trick at 17 years and 244 days old and also the youngest player to ever score in the World Cup Final at 17 years and 249 days old!

This truly is a feat achieved by Pele and no one could better it since 1958!

5. Longest clean sheet is 68 years.

The Longest clean sheet maintained was 68 years by France, until the World Cup finals in 1998, against Saudi Arabia in the first round. Coincidentally, it was also the day the first French man was being sent off with a red card, and that's none other than our head-butting legend, Zidane.

So here are 5 fun facts you now know about the world cup! Who do you think will win this year? Do share your thoughts about it in the comment section! Additionally, if you have some fun facts to share with us, drop it in the comment section as well!
